DIY Centerpieces – Long lasting orchids in glass
For the DIY bride, deciding to make your own wedding flowers and centerpieces can be exciting as well as daunting! You probably don’t want to be spending hours the day before the wedding frantically putting together arrangements. However, flowers can only last a certain number of days looking good so there is a limit to how early one might start making the arrangements. Similarly, once all put together, it is another matter actually transporting and setting up the flowers at the wedding venue. Here is a simple solution for the DIY bride – a long lasting orchid centerpiece that is quick to assemble, easy to pack, transport, and set-up!
Materials:
Directions:
- Place a layer of river stones, marbles, sea glass, or glass gems at the bottom of each glass cylinder.
- Place a Mokara orchid stem into each cylinder, trimming the stems so the flowers do not pass the lip of the cylinders. Make sure the ends of the stem are pushed into the river stones so they are not visible for a cleaner look. If using floating candles, leave about 2” of space between the tip of the flowers and the lip of the cylinder.
- Fill each glass cylinder with water covering the flowers. If using floating candles, place a floating candle at the water’s surface.
Notes:
It is not necessary to fill the vases entirely of water if you won’t be using floating candles. If so, just fill with enough water to cover the stones being sure the ends of the stems touch the water. This variation makes for a lighter centerpiece that is easier to transport. This centerpiece can be prepared about 3-5 days prior to the wedding. If assembling days before the wedding, do not fully immerse the flowers until the day before the wedding. Just put the stems in about an inch of water in the cylinder with pebbles and then fill to the top the day before the wedding. The flowers will look fresh longer this way and the water will remain clear for the wedding.

Packing up and transporting:
One of the best things about this centerpiece is the ease with which they can be packed up and transported. If you are purchasing the cylinders in bulk, the vases will come in cases of 12 – 24 in nice boxes with dividers. Keep these boxes! Once the individual vases are all set up with rocks, flowers, water, and candle, they can then be placed back into each space for each vase, and packed easily into the car. Be sure to reinforce the bottoms of the boxes with tape if each vase will be filled entirely with water!

Variations on the theme:
Mokara orchids are perfect for this design because they are long-lasting and relatively inexpensive for the number needed. You could also substitute mokaras with dendrobium orchid stems for different colors – white, purple, light orange, light pink, magenta, etc. Mokaras are usually found in a golden yellow or burgundy.

Another variation is to pluck each blossom off the stem and immerse a vase-full of blossoms with water, topped with a floating candle. In addition to mokara and dendrobium orchid blossoms, you could usecymbidium orchid blossoms as well as phalaenopsis orchidblooms. These will cost little more but are extremely beautiful and with the money you save by doing it yourself, can be very affordable in the end!
The larger the vase, the more dramatic the effect! So feel free to use taller glass vases – 20” tall and up! If using taller vases, you can then use entire stems of cymbidium orchids or a vase-ful of immersed larger blooming orchids – phalaenopsis and cymbidium orchids. Then top each vase with a larger floating candle, ~3” in diameter. Because these larger pieces will be more difficult to transport, one suggestion is to use full stems of cymbidium orchids, keeping the stems in about 3-4” of water instead of entirely submersed keeping things a lot lighter!
Estimated costs:
Total = $17.05 per centerpiece
